BBC: Iran’s cyber-war on Twitter The BBC’s Tehran correspondent, Jon Leyne , who was expelled from Iran after the election, reports from London.
Guardian: Oxfordgirl vs Ahmadinejad: the Twitter user taking on the Iranian regime Known only by her Twitter name, Oxfordgirl has emerged as a crucial link between the protesters and the outside world. “Before they started blocking mobile phones I was almost co-ordinating people’s individual movements – ‘Go to such and such street,’ or ‘Don’t go there, the Basij [militia] are waiting,’ ” she said. “It was very strange to be sitting in Oxford and co-ordinating things like that.”
Reuters: Iran’s Ebadi warns of catastrophe if more violence Iranian Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi said on Wednesday her country faced a catastrophe that would wreck peace in the whole Middle East if what she called government repression of the people were not halted. In an open letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council and High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, Ebadi said the patience and tolerance of Iranians was not limitless and urged action to persuade the government to change course. “A recurrence of the recent months’ events, the continuation of the the repressive policies and the killing of defenceless people could bring about a catastrophe that may undermine peace and security in Iran, if not in the entire region,” she said. The letter, circulating among diplomats and human rights activists in Geneva and which Pillay’s office confirmed she had received, was issued as the 47-member council prepared to hold a three-hour review on Feb. 15 of Iran’s rights policies. It called on the council — where a built-in majority of developing countries and their allies usually blocks any action affecting one of their number — to appoint a special investigator for Iran who could help end mounting repression.
FT: Hostage aims to bridge gap with captors John Limbert, one of the 52 US diplomats held hostage in Iran for 444 days, has returned to the state department and is trying to talk to his former captors. A generation of US diplomats has had almost no contact with Iran since the US embassy was taken over after the 1979 revolution but Mr Limbert, then a political officer, exchanged words with Ali Khamenei, now supreme leader. Nevertheless Mr Limbert, who is married to an Iranian, faces the dilemma that lies behind Barack Obama’s entire push for engagement with Tehran.
TB: Reading 22 Bahman Feb 11 is clearly a day where the government cannot apply severe force on a large scale because the revolution was supposed to have been in reaction to the violence and injustice of an oppressive regime in the first place. It would look monstrous, even among some supporters of the regime, if innocent unarmed civilians were subjected to indiscriminate beatings and attacks just like the film footage of the revolutionary days aired incessantly in the last few days. Next Thursday, up to 250,000 ordinary supporters may come out to the rally along with all their families, including small children and the elderly. This would make it extremely hard to throw tear gas and administer beatings when the line between protester and supporter blurs.
RFE: Iranian Revolution: Post-Election Unrest Reveals Cracks In The Republic Abbas Milani, director of the Iranian studies program at Stanford University, says that the past seven months have shown that the Islamic establishment is relying on military force more than ever in order to maintain its rule. Milani describes the Iranian regime as a semi-military Islamic one. “Following the flawed election, we see each day that the power of the Revolutionary Guard and the Basij [militia] increases. Each day the need of the regime for military might increases,” Milani says. Milani believes that each day the legitimacy of the establishment decreases and the “despotic regime” has more than ever become military in its nature.
Telegraph: Iranian regime facing splits over hardline crackdown on protests Iran’s leadership is facing splits in its security apparatus as it tries to mobilise against a threatened new wave of anti-government demonstrations, according to opposition groups and analysts.
Spiegel: Tehran Has Little Reason to Fear Sanctions The West is sharpening the tone of its threats against Iran, but Tehran so far remains unimpressed and has even begun enriching uranium to 20 percent. Any new sanctions imposed against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s regime are likely to be just as ineffective as existing ones.
